History of Visual Communication in the Nautical Field

This article explores the evolution of visual communication in the boating industry, from early advertising and magazines to contemporary social media and boat shows. Through an interdisciplinary approach, it examines how pleasure boats are represented across different media and identifies opportunities for richer, more inclusive forms of communication. The research also includes a qualitative survey investigating visitors’ perceptions of visual communication at boat shows.

The text presents an experimental workshop developed within the Graphic Design Lab at the University of Genoa. Drawing on research into typography and gender binaries, the workshop used type design to question gender stereotypes and traditional associations between typefaces and gender, encouraging students to explore more fluid typographic possibilities.
